Richard L. Smith, MD
Dr. Richard Smith joined Asheville Gastroenterology Associates in 1978. Shortly thereafter he became the first physician in the state of North Carolina to remove stones from the bile duct by newly developed endoscopic techniques. Dr. Smith’s practice includes all areas of general gastroenterology with an emphasis on endoscopic management of pancreatic and biliary diseases.
A graduate of Tulane University Medical School, Dr. Smith completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Virginia in 1975. He then completed a fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of North Carolina. He is a member of several professional organizations including the American College of Gastroenterology, American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, North Carolina Medical Society, and the Buncombe County Medical Society.
